2018’s highlights begin with the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Seattle Chapter Black Panther Party, ranging from a fashion and hip-hop show at Washington Hall to landmark speaking events from Seattle Chapter co-founders Elmer Dixon and Aaron Dixon, Danny Glover, and Elaine Brown, among many others.

We have also been particularly proud to see the progress being made on Since I Been Down (above), Gilda Sheppard and June Nho Ivers‘s complex and timely portrait of the prison pipeline in the U.S., and the amazing rehabilitation and education efforts being led by incarcerated individuals. Tracking two subjects over a decade of filming, the film takes a macro approach before delving into intimate character studies, which show how these stories are both unique and altogether too common.\

OTHER KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Charles Mudede‘s Thin Skin, a long-awaited feature film adaptation of Ahamefule Oluo‘s theatrical work, Now I’m Fine, has wrapped production
• Mark Titus‘ film about protections for wild salmon in Bristol Bay, The Wild, is nearly seeing completion
• Megan Griffiths‘ feature film Sadie premiered at SXSW in March and continues to make its trek at various film festivals nationwide
• Leah Warshawski‘s Big Sonia keeps making waves, years later

HOW ABOUT EXCITING NEW PROJECTS?

• Aimie Vallat‘s as-yet-untitled production with Reel Witness, about the refugee experience in the Pacific Northwest (pictured above)
• Clyde Petersen‘s experimental documentary about the band EARTH, titled Even Hell Has Its Heroes
• Wes Hurley‘s eagerly awaited feature film, Potato Dreams of America, based off an adaptation of his award-winning short, Little Potato
• Kimiko Marr, Marissa Fujimoto and Greg Sommers‘ multimedia project, Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimage, which documents the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII and the journey of the survivors and their descendants to preserve their legacies. (This special project was a recipient for the Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant Program through the National Park Service.)
