About

Schrader applies his dark, twisted vision to Jacques Tourneur’s classic of the same name. Starring a sinewy Nastassja Kinski, Cat People blurs the lines between erotica, fantasy, and horror. The film has gone on to become a cult favorite, and is most widely known for its title song performed by David Bowie. Cat People is a film that begs to be seen on a big screen, a deft balance of garish neon excess and art-house introspection. Schrader, never one to shy away from controversy, carefully tiptoes closer and closer towards the limits of good taste in this undeniable audience pleaser.

On first seeing Paul Schrader’s Cat People in 1982, my reaction was a wave of almost nauseated confusion: What was Schrader up to with this hodgepodge? Why did these voluptuous, neo-gothic jigsaw pieces sometimes feel like they had been soldered together by a blind monk in shop class? Precisely what the f*ck was he thinking?” – Howard Hampton, Artforum, 2014
