ALTAR INVITATION:

This NIGHTLIGHT: blood moon, Moonyeka is creating an Undas altar in reverence to death spirits, souls that have traversed, honoring our death cycles, and offerings of compassion to energies that are demonized with ‘atang’. Undas is in reference to All Soul’s Day / Dia de Los Muertos / Araw ng Patay / Day of The Dead which is observed Nov 1. – Nov. 2.

‘Atang’ references offerings made on the altar. For this altar, Moonyeka invites community to bring flowers in reds and oranges to the altar. There will be an optional invite to partake in a writing as meditation, which can also serve as atang to the altar.

ABOUT:

NIGHTLIGHT: Blood Moon is a special edition of the Velocity full moon performance ritual and dance party event! This time NIGHTLIGHT is happening in partnership with Northwest Film Forum; Blood Moon artists are preparing to get our blood pumping with full moon inspired offerings that invite the artists to pair live performance with video projection for a trippy full moon experiment. There will also be a post performance dance party with a live DJ and some special surprises to get us warmed up and ready for the winter ahead.

NIGHTLIGHT is a seasonal performance ritual + dance party inspired by full moon feelings and the need to come together when and how we can. Artist curators Fox Whitney and Moonyeka invite a rotating group of featured artists to collaborate to create a performance experience and dance party event on or near full moon moments happening in the winter, spring, summer and fall.

Queer ceremony. Tierra. Fuego, Agua, Viento. Reclaiming connection to bloodlines through the guidance of plant and land ancestors on Dakota and Anishinaabe land, Mni Sota Makoce. We find ourselves right where we are, as we listen deeply to the plantita ancestors near us. This dance film is the biomythology of bodies in Latine diaspora, Boricua, Chicana, Chilean. We journey with the archetypes which support/guide/mask/empower us, we are LOVER, VIRGEN, SHADOW, SERVANT, SIREN and ALCHEMIST. We are here now, and ancient, elders in training and millennials, we are stress, and meditation, we are tired and we are growing.

Filmed at Belwin Conservancy, our process was held by ancestors of long, tall grasses, bison, raspberries, mullein, yarrow, burr oak, and red pine, ancestral lands of the Dakota and Anishnaabe people.

This work is created with support from the McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Choreographers, the National Center of Choreography Akron, Belwin Conservancy, and the Metropolitan Regional Art Council.
