Introducing Board President Raya Leary

January 10, 2019

There is an energy of change in the world right now, which brings both difficulty and opportunity. More than an arts organization, Northwest Film Forum is a living organism, made up of people creating, gathering, laughing, learning and challenging one another. An organism that thrives in the face of change is one that leans into it, that is adaptable and willing to evolve—in tandem with or opposition to—the world around it.

2018 was an exciting year at NWFF. Children’s Film Festival Seattle (happening again this year from January 24 to February 9) served more youth, families, and educators than ever in its 14-year history, Local Sightings Film Festival renewed its commitment to womxn and non-binary filmmakers by achieving gender parity, and Northwest Film Forum had more artists and educators of color on staff than ever.

In October, we welcomed Vivian Hua as our new Executive Director, and a few months later, in December, I stepped into the role of Board President. Vivian and I are excited to work together on deepening community relationships from within and beyond NWFF’s walls–all while continuing to offer relevant, transformative, cinematic experiences and educational opportunities.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the human beings that make it all happen. First and foremost: YOU, those who have shown through record participation and deep, meaningful engagement that NWFF matters to you.  Also, of course, the hardworking staff: Brenan Chambers, Christopher Day, Vivian Hua, Jonah Kozlowski, Louie Romo, Amanda Salazar, Rana San, Elizabeth Shepherd and Paul Siple.

Here’s the deal, NWFF needs to raise $100,000 by January 15. Your financial support will help keep this hub of artists, film and media makers, activists and audiences thriving for another year. We understand that programming for community means relying on community support.

MAKE A GIFT

Take a moment to consider how much you can afford to contribute. Whatever the amount, you can help build a strong foundation for this work in 2019 by donating to NWFF today!

Raya Leary
Board President

P.S. For some of you, this may be your first time seeing my name. Hello, I’m Raya, the new Board President at NWFF! I’ve been serving on the board for over a year now and bring to my role a background in arts administration, arts funding and community building. I’d love to start my tenure off on a high note, but I need your help: if you can contribute and spread the word to people in your life, I believe we can exceed our $100,000 fundraising goal by January 15th!
