Create a visual interpretation of a poem using risograph animation and video looping techniques with Zine Hug (animators/educators Alex Barsky and Zack Lydon) and Cadence (artists/writers Rana San and Chelsea Werner-Jatzke)! 

The introductory, generative, and hands-on workshop is recommended for adults and youth ages 14+. With guidance from Cadence co-directors and Zine Hug, participants will co-create a collaborative riso animated video poem.  

WHAT TO EXPECT:
This two-day workshop takes place at Northwest Film Forum (Sat.) and Common Area Maintenance (Sun.). On day one we’ll adapt work by a local poet into visuals, get hands-on filming, and learn to create contact sheets for risograph. Day two is an optional risograph printing demonstration where we will produce the physical contact sheets generated during day one.

Day one (Northwest Film Forum):
Learn how to translate words into visual compositions and looping motion design. Working with a poem by a local poet, we will interpret and discuss how poetic concepts may be presented visually. 

After a group discussion, participants will split into teams, each given one or more lines from the poem, and dive straight into filming five second videos that can be looped. There will be an opportunity to share works-in-progress with the class. 

Participants will then learn how to create a riso animation by exporting video into an image sequence, creating contact sheets, and resequencing risograph-printed images into a digital video. We will use Spectrolite (available only on macOS) to convert image sequences into a contact sheet.

Time will remain for feedback and suggestions from the instructors, as well as additional tricks and techniques, shown in real-time.

Day two optional (Common Area Maintenance):
Get a hands-on demonstration of the risograph printing process and take home your very own print of the contact sheet you created during day one of the workshop. This will be a fun and informal time to work with a new material and think about the endless possibilities of what can be used to create video poetry. Participants who cannot attend will receive their contact sheets by mail.

DELIVERABLES:

• Participants will submit their final contact sheets by the end of class.
• Following the workshop, each participant will receive a high resolution (800dpi) contact sheet scan and physical prints (2-color, 11″ x 17″). If you are not able to attend day two in person, prints will be mailed. 
• Once scans are received, time in the edit lab may be scheduled for any participants seeking to re-sequence their work. 
• Cadence will re-sequence all sheets and assemble them into a single poetry film which will be shown during Cadence Video Poetry Festival 2024.

ONSITE WORKSHOP SUPPLIES WILL INCLUDE:

• Computers with Adobe Suite and Spectrolite installed.
• iPads for filming and simple editing – Participants may also use personal devices (tablets or phones) to film and edit.

WHAT TO BRING:

• Lunch – There will be a 30-35 minute lunch break. We highly recommend bringing your lunch or ordering ahead for a quick pick up nearby.

COVID-19 SAFETY

For all in-person attendants, we are requiring masks that cover both nose and mouth while in the building. Disposable masks are available at the door for those who need them. We are aware that Washington lifted the indoor mask requirement on 3/12/2022; this is NWFF’s own policy. We will also have hand sanitizer and additional cleaning supplies available to clean all used surfaces.
