No camera? No problem!

In this exciting new summer camp, campers will explore direct animation with our experienced instructors from the Interbay Cinema Society. 

Direct animation, also known as drawn-on film animation or camera-less animation, is a filmmaking technique where footage is produced by creating the images directly on film stock. Direct animation is a tactile and fun way for young filmmakers to experiment with different materials and techniques. What happens when you hole-punch a film strip, or soak it in hibiscus water for an hour? The only way to find out is to try it! In this camp, campers are encouraged to make a mess and play with unconventional materials to create surprising and fantastical visuals. Scratch, draw, soak, paint, and more! 

What to expect:
🚀 Try direct animation techniques,
🎨 Experiment with paint, washi tape, nail polish, and more wacky materials, 
🎬 Learn about 16mm film and film history,
🎥 Collaborate with other campers to complete a film and watch it on the big screen!

Camp Preparation & Safety

• All technologies and supplies are included in the camp cost and provided.
• Snacks will be provided, and campers will be asked to bring a sack lunch.
• We will practice physical distancing, masking, and health screening according to city and state guidelines at the time of the camp. We anticipate this will include masking and physical distancing in the camp space.
• While filmmaking is a highly collaborative art form, using shared equipment, this camp is designed to allow for more space and individual equipment for each camper. Each camper will get to work on designing and making their own creations, in a large collaborative space, just like an animation studio!
