About

From 2020-2023, Minda Martin (filmmaker and educator at UW Bothell) has been teaching a course titled The City as Character in collaboration with archivists Anne Frantilla, Libby Hopfauf, and Jeanie Fisher from Seattle Municipal Archives (SMA) and Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound (MIPoPS). Students from the class produce short videos which directly engages SMA and MIPoPS to conduct research with selected public hearings listed in the archives recorded over 20-50 years ago, and make connections with the contemporary moment, mixing past and present newspaper clippings, photos, audio, and motion pictures. The assignments emphasize active and experiential learning by asking students to edit real experiences and voices from their communities about an issue that they care about at this moment, such as rent-control, discrimination, environmental injustice, transportation, and more that shapes the character of their city.

SEATTLE MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES

The Municipal Archives collects, preserves, and makes accessible the records of city government. Records document how the city has grown, provide insight into decisions city officials and its employees have made, and offer a window into the intersection between city residents and their government. The archives holds textual records, audio recordings, photographs, maps and audiovisual materials available to all researchers.

MOVING IMAGE PRESERVATION OF PUGET SOUND (MIPoPS)

Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound (MIPoPS) is a non-profit formed in 2014 that enables archives, libraries, and museums, as well as arts, science, and heritage organizations, to convert their legacy video recordings to digital formats, allowing new access to our region’s cultural heritage. MIPoPS assists nonprofit organizations with videotape materials in their collections, including documentaries, oral histories, art and dance performances, public works, industrial and educational content, “orphaned” productions and other footage. They guide them through the entire preservation process from analog object to digital file, by helping with identification, appraisal, digitization, and care for the resulting digital files according to archival best practices. They support public access by providing an online platform for digitized content.
